Getting here and doing it well wasn’t an overnight process
Keith brings a wealth of experience and a track record of outstanding achievement to his position. He has the background and experience to quickly evaluate a situation, define what needs to be done, propose a course of action, work with others to critique it and achieve consensus, develop a plan for implementation, and coordinate its successful execution.
Keith has a life-time of service that started when he was class president of his freshman and senior classes in high school, President of the Sigma Nu Fraternity at Mercer University, and throughout his 23 year career in the U.S.Navy, where he rose to the rank of Commander.
He deployed around the globe in aircraft carriers, guided-missile destroyers and guided-missile cruisers, operating with every numbered fleet and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and other allied forces during the Cold War and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. His sea service assignments include USS Saratoga (CV 60), USS Chandler (DDG 996), USS South Carolina (CGN 37) and USS Leahy (CG 16).
Ashore, Keith served as an instructor at Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) Pacific, as a strategic policy planner for a variety of national security programs on the Joint Staff/J-5, and on the faculty of U.S. Air Force Command and Staff College where he served in a Ph.D. billet.
After retirement from the Navy in 2001, he moved to Colorado and became the General Manager for an outdoor store in Colorado Springs. In May, 2004, he and his wife, Evelyn, purchased and operated The Trailhead and Trailhead Cycle & Ski in Buena Vista. During this time, he also served as Chairman of the Chaffee County Visitors Board (CCVB), and was voted into the office as Trustee for the Town of Buena Vista where he led on community development, transportation, trails, and environmental issues.
Overlapping his second trustee term, Keith served as Executive Director of Friends of Browns Canyon, leading to the successful designation of Browns Canyon National Monument in 2015. Here he coordinated local efforts with key partners to protect this unique landscape through innovative multi-agency and organizational outreach and advocacy programs. Keith stepped down from this position when he was voted in as Chaffee County Commissioner, District 1, in 2016.
Keith and Evelyn are parents to two adult daughters and have had several Weimaraners over the years to accompany them on their many outdoors adventures. They are members of Grace Church in Buena Vista.
